The article you are about to read is written entirely by GPT-3, OpenAI’s powerful new language generator.

The future of artificial intelligence: How far away is the Singularity?

The primary bottleneck for progress in AI is hardware. It makes no sense to develop software that has to run on the same hardware that was available in 1970.

The software bottleneck is just getting to the point where we can begin to design and build new hardware that will support the next phase of progress in AI.

AI will progress exponentially when hardware advances can keep up. As we develop new hardware we will be able to create new AI software that takes advantage of the new hardware and we end up with an exponential increase in intelligence.

This new hardware is called “exascale” (10¹⁸ floating point operations per second) and we need it in about 10 years to make progress towards the Singularity.

What is the Singularity?

The Singularity is a future time period in which we create more intelligent machines than we are, and where the rate of progress in AI exceeds our ability to understand or control it.

Is the Singularity Near?
